About

Welcome to Coal Region Reflections: Big Mountain & Beyond! This blog is a heartfelt exploration of the rich history, unique culture, and enduring legacy of Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region.

What began ten years ago as a Facebook page exclusively dedicated to sharing the history and stories of the people who lived in Big Mountain, has now grown into a broader journey through the stories, landscapes, and lives that shaped this unique part of Pennsylvania. While Big Mountain’s history will always be a central theme throughout this blog and my Facebook page, the scope has expanded to include the surrounding anthracite communities, all of which played a vital role in the coal region’s past.

Here, you’ll find a mix of historical insights, personal reflections, and visual stories—drawing from archival research, old photographs, and cherished memories. Whether it’s tales of life in coal patch towns, “then and now” comparisons, or reflections on the resilience of coal region communities, this space celebrates the people and places that make the anthracite region so special.

I invite you to explore, reminisce, and connect with our anthracite coal region heritage. Thank you for joining me on this journey through the past, as we preserve and celebrate the stories that continue to define us today.
